Windows in Conversation: Looking Through the Reflection

As part of The Open Source 2021 Festival, Artspace is looking past its gallery walls onto the streets of the Ninth Square, seeking conversations with our neighbors; commissioning three Greater New Haven artists, Amira Brown, Alexis Robbins, and Elida Paiz, to create video installations challenging the dichotomies between interior and exterior, inside(r) and outside(r), belonging and not-belonging.
In its decades-long life, Artspace has often stopped short in centering those closest to us: our next-door neighbors, passers-by, and New Haveners, while keeping in mind that people, specifically Black, indigenous, and People Of Color, are disproportionately disadvantaged within all of this. Our community has more often than not, felt unable to come inside and consider the space as a place for themselves.
This presentation is part of a process, and part of a season of change and repair; starting from within its gallery walls extending beyond, into our shared community. Each video installation comes alive after gallery hours, encouraging wonder and curiosity of what else lies inside. It is only through our neighbors, artists, and fellow New Haveners that Artspace can truly serve its intended purpose: fostering engagement in the visual arts, by bringing artists and communities together to catalyze new ways of learning, thinking, and being.
